What does the Institute do?

Joining the Institute of Modern Magic connects you to other practitioners around the world. A membership gives you access to reference materials, book reviews and digests, recorded lectures, early access to new courses, and an invite to our members-only Discord. Members can join committees, assist in major Institute projects, and get help from the Institute on their own ideas.

Advocacy

The Institute of Modern Magic offers a wide variety of courses and provides original resource materials for participants. The Institute also publishes a free weekly newsletter to keep the community up-to-date on events impacting our sphere.

The Institute works to archive the metaphysical research of our members while also conducting sociological research on who magicians are, our needs, and our community as a whole. Our projects change over time but are all focused on developing a healthier community.

At our core, the Institute of Modern Magic exists to advocate for the economic, social, and mystical well-being of magicians. From business strategy to coordinated political campaigning, the Institute serves as a nexus for magic in action.

  • Although founded by the Kingdom of the Horizon, a magical and religious tradition, the Institute of Modern Magic itself is a pluralist institution serving magicians of all traditions. The Horizon Framework is rooted in an explicitly poly/pantheistic worldview so some religions may need to work harder to adapt it to their practice, but the Framework is designed to work in any cosmology. We encourage practitioners from all backgrounds to lean in and make an impact on the future of our community. Mutual prosperity is our guiding principal. “Better” will mean different things to different people and that’s a good thing.

  • We do not offer refunds on courses. Because each course is customized for its participants and many require prep work, once you’re registered it is expected you will be attending the course. If there is a serious reason you are unable to attend the course you’ve registered for, we will work with you to find an appropriate arrangement. If the course has not begun, we may offer partial refunds but you will need to contact the instructor directly and it will be at their discretion. If a product arrives damaged, is incorrect, or otherwise is not as advertised, contact us as soon as possible to correct the issue.

  • All courses are currently taught by our founder, Cooper Henckel. He has over 6 years of classroom instruction experience, along with 5 years of public communications practice and research across the globe. Our pedagogy emphasizes the role of the instructor as a guide and participant, not a source of absolute knowledge. Courses are structured around engagement with core concepts through activities, discussion, and experimentation. We want you to engage with the material, not simply consume it!

Throughout each of the different types of courses, you’ll draw from other participants’ unique experiences and perspectives while the instructor provides information and opportunities for reflection. As we grow and add more instructors, they will be trained in a crash course in teaching or already have teaching experience/qualifications.
