"Playful Protection" Magical Self-Defense 101
Drawing on one of the best-known games of strategy and warfare, “Playful Protection” uses chess strategies, gamesmanship, and actual chess pieces to give participants everything they need to start creating powerful, multi-layered magical protections. Learn how to win fights by avoiding them, by attrition without exhausting your own forces, and other tricky little strategies well demonstrated in this centuries’ old game. Over the three weeks of this class, participants will be able to correctly frame how magical conflict works, create the three basic forms of protective magic (wards, barriers, and sentries), and understand the concept of a “protective ecosystem” over a “defense system” style of protective theory. In the end, this approach is min-maxing your protective power, turning life and death into a game with clear rules set by you.
Starting in the first session, we’ll identify how you can use three different styles of protective magics. You will learn the difference between wards and barriers while also learning how to make sentries: alarm systems or outright guardians that thrive in your ecosystem. We’ll look at different approaches across the world and how they overlap, where the same fundamental principles return despite no obvious connection between those people and their magical traditions. With you SWOT-ing your own magical protections before class 2, we dig deep into how to create these kinds of magics immediately. The second class will be as much discussion as it is lecture, with participants collaborating to brainstorm and support one another as they imagine the possible! Before the third class, you’ll be asked to give some time thinking about what kind of spirits, mythological creature, or fictional entity you want to bring as a sentry for yourself: are you a lions, tigers, or bears kind of person? That will matter on week three when I show you how to take a secondhand shop chess board missing pieces and turn it into the centerpiece of your masterful, magical ecosystem.
By the end of the class, you will:
be able to identify harmful magics, the correct protective magic to use, and the best way to approach magical conflict with spirits and other practitioners alike
understand the three major types of protective magic and how to construct a simple form of each
utilize a chessboard and five pieces to create your own protective ecosystem that bolsters allies and weakens enemies without you lifting a finger
